Government Forms Strategic Committee to Assess Domestic Flour Capabilities image

The government has announced the formation of a scientific committee tasked with analysing the basic composition of bread, including the production process of flour—a key component of bread—as part of a wider effort to reduce reliance on imports.

The initiative is being presented as a strategic move in response to shifting global trade dynamics following tariff policies from US President Donald Trump. 

Dr Maher Shaaban, who is leading the committee, told Al-Hudood that the team has been given two years to complete its investigation. “This is a clear signal to both regional and global partners that we no longer view imports as untouchable or irreplaceable,” he said.

Dr Shaaban noted that, if the committee’s laboratory work confirms that flour has an organic origin, further research will be directed towards developing methods for producing it from local soil.

“It’s a challenge,” he said. “But it’s one I feel confident we can face.”
