A meeting between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the secular caliph President of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan has led to, among other things, an agreement to further collaboration between the two countries on a number of goals, including expanding their influence in Africa to include Somalia.

On the ground, the agreement will see the support of new militias and the creation of new ones, adding new layers of complexity to a decades-long conflict that the press statement said “would keep things interesting.”

The agreement stipulated the necessity of keeping Somalia united against any Ethiopian or Emirati attempts at carving out a new Somali territory and leasing it, whether for “the plants, beaches, the coal, the gold, uranium, or oil,” said President El Sisi at the press conference.

The agreement also stressed the importance of flexibility on other issues related to Africa, as an agreement in Somalia does not translate to an agreement in Libya or Sudan. President El Sisi, holding President Erdogan’s hand, said, “Today’s friend in Somalia may be tomorrow’s enemy in Djibouti, or a lover in Mauritania, or a lover’s brother in Chad.”
