A Christian man has decided to leave the country after decades of discrimination and oppression by his Muslim-majority state and fellow citizens, opting to leave and become part of the Arab minority abroad that suffers from discrimination, oppression and racism as well.

Boutros George said he decided to sacrifice the life that he knows among family and friends who speak his language in order to escape prejudice rooted in religion.

“And indeed, praise be to God, they appreciate my religion here and discriminate against me for other reasons,” he said.

George said the opportunity to emigrate had allowed him to experience new and fresh forms of oppression.

“I no longer have to hear clerics and preachers insulting Christians during Friday prayers or forbidding me from eating in public during Ramadan out of respect for those who are fasting,” he said. “Now I get to experience things like being kicked off a plane for being Arab.”

“It is actually here that I got to live the full Arab experience ” he added. “Immigration officers treat me just like they would a Muslim Arab; I finally feel like an equal”
